About the exam
What is the Goethe-Zertifikat?
The Goethe-Zertifikat is the German language certificate issued by the Goethe-Institut, Germany’s worldwide cultural institute. Its levels match the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), and it is widely recognised by universities, employers and authorities.
German Cafe Academy prepares students for the exam. The exam itself is conducted by the Goethe-Institut or its licensed exam centres; GCA guides you on choosing a centre and booking a date.
Levels we prepare you for
- A1Start Deutsch 1 / Goethe-Zertifikat A1Basic everyday German. Taken as one exam; speaking is done in a small group.
- A2Goethe-Zertifikat A2Routine communication on familiar topics. Taken as one exam.
- B1Goethe-Zertifikat B1Independent use of German. Modular — modules can be taken individually.
- B2Goethe-Zertifikat B2Fluent, detailed communication. Modular, and the most requested level for Germany pathways.
Exam structure
The four Goethe modules
Each level tests the same four skills. Task types, length and difficulty increase with the level.
Lesen · Reading
Short notices to long articles, depending on level. Tasks test detail, gist and opinion. We train time management — most candidates lose marks by running out of time, not knowledge.
Hören · Listening
Announcements, conversations, interviews and lectures. Recordings are played once or twice depending on the task. We practise with exam-speed audio and note-taking.
Schreiben · Writing
From forms and short messages (A1) to forum posts and formal emails (B1/B2). Every practice text is corrected individually against the official criteria.
Sprechen · Speaking
Introductions, partner tasks, presentations and discussions. Usually taken in pairs. We rehearse in the actual format so the exam day feels familiar.
Exam formats are periodically updated by the Goethe-Institut. Always check the current model papers at goethe.de before your exam.
