Why it matters
German proficiency and healthcare pathways
To work as a nurse in Germany, your qualification must be recognised — and German proficiency is a central part of that. Many recognition routes require B2-level German, sometimes through a nursing-specific exam; some let you begin at B1 and complete B2 in Germany.
Because the language step takes the longest, planning it first keeps the rest of your timeline realistic.
Communication you’ll need
- Taking patient history and describing symptoms
- Explaining procedures and giving instructions
- Shift handovers and talking with doctors
- Comforting patients and speaking with families
- Understanding documentation and care plans
- Telephone conversations and appointments

Pathway overview
How the preparation journey usually looks
- 1.Level check and timeline planning with a GCA counsellor
- 2.A1 and A2 — build foundations (classroom or online)
- 3.B1 — independent communication; many candidates take a B1 exam here
- 4.B2 — professional German and exam preparation (Goethe, telc, or nursing-specific where required)
- 5.Recognition, job and visa steps — handled through employers, agencies and German authorities
The teaching methods were very effective, and the instructors were patient and supportive. They provided a strong foundation in grammar and conversation, which really helped me when I moved to Germany for my nursing studies. I was able to pass my language exams and now confidently use German in my daily life and nursing training.
