Goethe vs TELC: Which German Exam Should You Take?

A practical comparison of the Goethe-Zertifikat and telc Deutsch exams for students and nurses in Kerala — format, recognition, and how to choose.

Both are CEFR exams — the level means the same thing

Goethe-Zertifikat and telc Deutsch are both aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference. A B1 from either exam certifies B1-level German. Neither is ‘easier’ in a way that changes the level you have proven.

What actually differs

The differences are practical rather than academic:

  • Format: Goethe B1 and B2 are modular — you can sit or retake individual modules. telc exams are typically taken as a whole, with a written and an oral part.
  • Speaking: Goethe pairs candidates for interactive tasks; telc's oral exam also uses pair tasks with a different structure and scoring.
  • Specialised exams: telc offers profession-specific exams such as telc Deutsch B1-B2 Pflege for nursing.
  • Availability: exam dates and seat availability differ by centre and month, which often decides the choice in practice.

How to choose

Start with the requirement. Check exactly which certificates your university, employer or recognition authority accepts — some name specific exams. If both are accepted, choose based on the next available date and which format suits you.

At GCA we prepare students for both formats and help you decide once we know your pathway.
