German Language Requirements for Nursing Pathways: A Planning Guide

How German levels A1 to B2 fit into a nurse's Germany plan, what to check with authorities, and how to build a realistic language timeline.

Why language is the longest step

For most nurses, documents and recognition run in parallel — but German proficiency is what takes the most time. Planning the language journey first makes the rest of the timeline realistic.

The typical progression

Most nursing learners move through four levels:

  • A1 — foundations, pronunciation, everyday phrases
  • A2 — routine conversations, past tenses, health basics
  • B1 — independent communication; a common milestone for some routes
  • B2 — the level many recognition routes require for professional practice

Check the current requirement

Requirements depend on the route and the federal state, and they change. Always verify with official sources such as make-it-in-germany.com and the relevant recognition authority. This article is general guidance, not legal or immigration advice.
